Big Brother and Winston essays

Big Brother and Winston essays Freedom is a basic desire of human nature. Many novels are written about men who want freedom so much that they would die for it. However, many countries today are not free. For example, the war in Iraq is about trying to free people from oppression. Before the war, Iraq was like Big Brother and no one had any freedom. George Orwell wrote 1984 to show that governments that take freedom away from its citizens are evil. He used three characters to illustrate this evil: Parsons, Mr. Charrington, and OBrien. Parsons is a fat and obnoxious member of the Party. He works at the Ministry of Truth. His job is to conduct propaganda and historical revisionism. His wife is rather stupid and his children have no manners. They are also member of the Junior Spies who spy on adults (especially their parents) and report any disloyalty to the Party. Next, Mr. Carrington is an old man who runs a secondhand store in the prole district. He seems to be nice to Winston and Julia. He also seems to support Winstons rebellion against the Party. However, no one in Winstons world is who he seems to be. In reality Mr. Carrington is a member of the Thought Police. Winston even tried to catch the attention of the Thought Police by writing Big Brother is Watching You in his diary. Finally, the most evil character is OBrien. He is a member of the Inner Party, and he makes Winston believes that he is rebellious, too. The revolutionary group called the Brotherhood is what Winston wants to join, and he thinks OBrien can get him into it. Instead, OBrien abuses and brainwashes Winston and turns him into a loyal subject of Big Brother. In conclusion, Winstons downfall was mainly caused by his paranoia about the Party. However, the evil characters of Parsons, Mr. Charrington, and OBrien manipulate Winstons downfall. Freedom is something that Winston will never exper...

Chinese Pronouns

Chinese Pronouns There are just a few pronouns in Mandarin Chinese, and unlike many European languages, there are no subject / verb agreements to worry about. Just a few simple rules tell you everything you need to know about pronouns in Chinese. Basic Pronouns These are the pronouns of written Mandarin Chinese. I, me: wÇ’: 我You: nÇ - ä ½  You (formal): nà n:  Ã¦â€š ¨Ã‚  He, Him: tÄ : ä »â€"She, Her: tÄ : Ã¥ ¥ ¹It: tÄ : Ã¥ ®Æ' Youll notice that there are two ways of saying you. When speaking to elders or someone in authority, it is more polite to address them formally with æ‚ ¨ (nà n) instead of the less formal ä ½   (nÇ ). While there are six pronouns listed above in written Mandarin, in spoken Mandarin it boils down to just three basic pronouns: I / me, you, he / she / it. This is because ä »â€" / Ã¥ ¥ ¹ / Ã¥ ®Æ' are all pronounced the same, tÄ .   Plurals Plurals are formed by adding 們 (traditional form) / ä » ¬ (simplified form) at the end of a basic pronoun. This character is pronounced men. See below: We, Us: wÇ’ men: 我們 /  Ã¦Ë†â€˜Ã¤ » ¬You (plural): nÇ men: ä ½  Ã¥â‚¬â€˜ / ä ½  Ã¤ » ¬They, Them:  tÄ men: ä »â€"們 /  Ã¤ »â€"ä » ¬ Differentiating Gender As discussed earlier, gender differentiating pronouns like he, she, and it all have the same sound, tÄ , but different written characters. In spoken Mandarin, differentiating between genders is a little less obvious. However, the context of the sentence will usually tell you whether the speaker is referring to a man, a woman, or a thing. Reflexive Pronoun Mandarin Chinese also has a reflexive pronoun è‡ ªÃ¥ · ± (zà ¬ jÇ ). This is used when both subject and object are the same. For example: TÄ xÇ hun tÄ zà ¬ jÇ Ã¤ »â€"Ã¥â€"Å"æ ¬ ¢Ã¤ »â€"è‡ ªÃ¥ · ± /  Ã¤ »â€"Ã¥â€"Å"æ ¡Ã¤ »â€"è‡ ªÃ¥ · ±He likes himself. è‡ ªÃ¥ · ± (zà ¬ jÇ ) can also be used directly after a noun or pronoun to intensify the subject. For example: WÇ’ zà ¬ jÇ xÇ hun.我è‡ ªÃ¥ · ±Ã¥â€"Å"æ ¬ ¢ / 我è‡ ªÃ¥ · ±Ã¥â€"Å"æ ¡I, myself, like it. Sentence Examples Using Chinese Pronouns Here are some sentences using pronouns. See if you can use these examples as a guide or template to creating your own sentences. Employee hand book opinion Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Employee hand book opinion - Coursework Example The book does not cater for circumstances under which the workforce is small in size and the employer is present in the organization and able to convey information across. This kind of information gap raises concern on the reliability of the Handbook as far as its adoption is concerned (Caruth, Caruth, & Pane, 2009). The handbook fails to give an alternative measure to the employees in the event that the organization is caught in cash deficiency such that it may not meet the obligations to pay its workers. This handbook gives limited information on leadership structure of the organization and how it affects how the employees are treated. In most cases, the workplace policies are subjected to progressive changes by successive leadership and this is not well addressed in the Handbook (Caruth, Caruth, & Pane, 2009). Besides, organization culture plays a critical role in employee-employer relations which is evidently not explained clearly in the handbook. Such limited information presents a study challenge to any reader to the handbook. Caruth, D. L., Caruth, G. D., & Pane, S. S. (2009). Solow Growth Model Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Solow Growth Model - Essay Example The second assumption was that if you hold technological progress and D/L is going down as we deplete the resources in a country, K/L may be going up because of capital accumulation, if capital accumulation was allowed to take place in an economy its possible for Y/L to remain constant or even increase and this will lead to economic growth. If the population remains to grow in the Malthusian version, the Malthusian version is what Malthus discussed what would result from high population, he argued that in the case where population was left to grow without any control measures then this would result to a complete depletion of resources, therefore if the population grows according to the Malthusian version then this dictates that Y/L will eventually approach zero. However if we hold population constant and allow K/L to increase without a limit then Y/L will increase. If technological progress occurs in an economy such that c is not equal to zero then for any value of c its possible to calculate a growth rate of L that is consistent with Y/L remaining positive, therefore technological progress can compensate for pop... However if we hold population constant and allow K/L to increase without a limit then Y/L will increase. If technological progress occurs in an economy such that c is not equal to zero then for any value of c its possible to calculate a growth rate of L that is consistent with Y/L remaining positive, therefore technological progress can compensate for population growth. Therefore according to Solow the factors that facilitate population growth include capital accumulation and technological progress, this are the factors that determine whether per capita income grows, decline or remain constant. (Scott (1989)) Shortcomings of the Solows model: The Cobb Douglas function he uses assumes constant returns to scale; also his model assumes that there exists constant elasticity of substitution among the factors of production used in the production process, this assumption allows the standard of living and economic growth to be maintained even if D/L approaches zero as long as K/L rises appropriately. He also assumes that every generation no matter the distance have similar opportunities with the current one, this is not consistent with human behaviour, and people today only care about their immediate gratification and not for generations to come. Other theories of economic growth: The classical school of economist which included Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Thomas Mathus and John Stuart Mill considered the main factors of production which included land, capital and labour but in the absence of technological advancement, they however recognised the role of capital accumulation in economic development and

Is the Nfl Too Dangerous

IS THE NFL TOO DANGEROUS? BY ALEXANDER COLON Football is one of America’s most beloved sports and with the super bowl coming up; fans of the sport are getting ready for the big game. I am an avid football fan myself and love playing it as much I enjoy watching it. What I have come to notice recently, is how the lives of football players are drastically changed when they are off the field. Football is a full contact sport, if you’re not prepared or unprotected at any given time during a play, you could end up limping off the field nursing injuries or even leave the game on a stretcher.Football players risk physical injuries every time they set foot on the field, and everyone is aware of that. What most people don’t know is that after players football careers are done and over, they face more problems than just a sore body every morning. Some players even play through these painful times in their career without even mentioning it, because they fear they will be dro pped from the roster. In recent research it has been found that mental trauma is occurring in football players leaving them mentally unstable or damaged later in life. This brings about the argument of football being too dangerous or a fair contact sport that all precautions for injuries are being tended to. When a fan watches a football game they don’t think about what the players go through off the field but only of the performance they are putting on the field. It is believed that every football player knows the risks of playing and has the knowledge that they might injure themselves physically. What a lot of the players don’t know is that they might damage their brains and develop things later in life like CTE.Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) has common symptoms like sudden memory loss, paranoia, and depression during middle age. It is also known to cause dementia pugilistica, which was what a lot of boxers fell victim to but now more football players are bein g linked to it. NFL players get paid millions to do their job, something most people would kill for, and some people think that the reward is worth the risk. NFL players truly do put their lives on the line when they go out to play but the fame and money is compensation enough for the risks they take in some people’s opinions. In my opinion if you’re playing in the NFL then you are getting paid more than enough for what you’re risking. Even if their brains are messed up they have enough money to live comfortably for the rest of their lives. What the NFL should do is make players sign a waiver informing them of the possibilities that they might contract a disease from getting hit to many times and hopefully this would make them more comfortable with the repercussions.
